You might also be someone holding your phone in this very moment reading this article. Yeah, our smartphones have become a part of our existence and it is really arguable whether modern humans can stay at least one hour without their mobile. All our connections, relationships, businesses, educational tasks and simply everything is done through our phones and even though our mobile has made several tasks easier for us, the truth is that we are more disconnected with our life because of our mobile.
American photographer Eric Pickergill creates an awesome project called ‘Removed’ to highlight our horrible addiction to smartphones.
In his project, he removed the phones and other digital devices from the photographs that he had collected and the end result was quite astonishing. All the pictures clearly showed how much people are missing because of their addiction to mobile phones and the photographer confess that even he himself is too much addicted to his phone.
However, he was inspired to start the
project after a family he met at a New York Café. He wrote that:
“Family sitting next to me at Illium cade in Troy, NY is so disconnected from one another. Not much talking. Father and two daughters have their own phones out. Mom doesn’t have one or chooses to leave it put away.
She stares out the window, sad and alone in
the company of her closest family.
Dad looks up every so often to announce some obscure piece of info he found online”.
Even though the situation sounds sad, this
is something that we daily encounter in our life.
You might see several groups of people doing nothing but taking out their mobiles and engaged with that without having an actual conversation with people around them.
In all these pictures, Pickergill asked his friends and strangers to pose for pictures in their natural way and when the phones are taken out, the pictures appear quite bizarre and odd.
He says,
“I am not attempting to tell others what to do with their time, I am just hopefully offering up a moment of realization.
I just personally need the reminder to put
it down because it is an addiction.
This phantom limb is used as a way of signaling busyness and unapproachability to strangers while existing as an addictive force that promotes the splitting of attention between those who are physical with you and those who are not”.
